Washington DC - Georgia Avenue

The Georgia Avenue district was once the main route running north into the countryside from Downtown Washington. In earlier days the district was a first home to many European immigrants. Today, the community is strongly Caribbean, Latino, and African American. Georgia Avenue is a busy commercial street that runs through varied neighborhoods along its five-mile route.

Georgia Avenue is full of Civil War relics and history. Fort Stevens can be found here, the only Civil War fort in Washington to see military action. The accompanying Battleground National Military Cemetery is the burial ground for the troops who lost their lives at Ft. Stevens. Howard University is also along the way, it being the first university open to African Americans in the south.
