Washington DC - Foggy Bottom

The Foggy Bottom district gets its name from early settlers as fog tended to concentrate here in the swamps of early Washington. Despite the early morning fog, this historic riverfront community is one of the city's oldest 19th century neighborhoods. Also known as the “West End,” Foggy Bottom used to be home to working class Irish, German, and African Americans who were employed at the several breweries, glass plants, and the city gas works.

Foggy Bottom has boat rides on the Potomac River, pathways into Rock Creek Park, interesting places to eat, and enduring performances at the world-famous J. F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The National Academy of Sciences is also found at Foggy Bottom with a statue of Albert Einstein welcoming visitors at the main entrance.
